Conventional body composition analyzers from late 1980's needs empirical data to overcome the poor accuracy and reproducibility. However, when empirical data is used, the following problems occur.
1 For certain groups that do not share the common facts of age or gender such as children, elderly people, patients, and athletes, BIA cannot be applied.
Since children, elderly people, patients and athlete groups have the different body composition compared to the normal adult group, their particular body composition cannot be determined by empirical formulas using age and gender.
2 Machines using empirical estimations are less sensitive to the individual's body composition, resulting in lower accuracy.
Normal range of percent body fat is between 10~40%, thus the normal people will have a full range of about 30%. If a half of the results are already determined by empirical formulas, it would be less accurate detecting changes in body composition. Therefore, the improvement of multi frequency and segmental analysis technology makes it possible to get correct impedance values without the use of any empirical formulas for certain body shapes differing from the standard one.
Since InBody only applies accurately measured impedance values to the results, it becomes easy to detect the changes in body composition and shape because of the sensitivity of the impedance readings.

No reliance upon empirical formulas, and the sole use of impedance values is the technical know-how. Used only by InBody.

Tip> Another technological know-how, 99% reproducibility
Reproducibilty of medical devices is necessary to achieve accurate results. It is important that the same results are given when the same person is measured under equal conditions more than once. Reproducibility must be guaranteed so that data compared before and after treatment holds true. Polar methods used in the past showed very high errors depending on the location or method of attachment, not guaranteeing reproducibility. InBody uses a total of 8 polars, with two for each hand and foot, with separate electrical currents and voltage. The InBody's measuring points of resistance are always the same providing accurate reproducibility. The secret of InBody's acknowledged reproducibility is in this touch-type 8-polar.
Tip> Whys is trunk impedance important? Why consider the body as 5 cylinders?
The arms and legs are composed of bones, skeletal muscle, and subcutaneous fat and their metabolism is very stable. On the other hand, the trunk is an area in physiological perspective, where metabolism is extremely high due to processes such as circulation, digestion, and respiration. Thus, in order to accurately measure the trunk, a very sensitive and accurate technique is required. By accurately measuring the trunk, which comprises half of the body, an accurate body composition analysis can be achieved.
It would be easy to consider the body composition as two segments: the upper and lower half, right and left half, or diagonal section of the body. However, this would be measuring impedance with the assumption that the metabolically stable limbs and metabolically active trunk share common characteristics, and thus cannot be completely accurate. (GOOD)
Tip> Utilization of edema index and segmental muscle mass
Segmental muscle mass and edema index are variables that are supplied by InBody's DSM method. By separately measuring the impedance of the limbs and trunk, segmental muscle mass can be determined. The segmental muscle evaluation of the InBody is so accurate that it can differentiate between a right hander and a left hander, and can speculate about previous injuries and sports played by the subject. Segmental muscle mass readings are utilized in orthopedics, rehabilitation medicine, and physiotherapy to monitor a treatment process.
Edema index is supplied by the multifrequency technique. Edema index reflects water balance which should be maintained at all times. InBody's edema index accurately reflects the state of healthy individuals as well as that of dialysis or ascites patients. This feature is commonly utilized by nephrologists in their patient assesments. Since InBody provides a total edema index along with a segmental index, it can be determined whether segmental muscle mass is due to true muscle development or if it is being overestimated. Thus, segmental muscle mass and edema index have led to the widespread usage of the InBody in orthopedics, rehabilitation medicine, OBGYN, nephrology, and health examination centers, apart from its common use as a device solely for obesity clinics.
