The arms and legs are composed of bones, skeletal muscle, and subcutaneous fat and their metabolism is very stable. On the other hand, the trunk is an area in physiological perspective, where metabolism is extremely high due to processes such as circulation, digestion, and respiration. Thus, in order to accurately measure the trunk, a very sensitive and accurate technique is required. By accurately measuring the trunk, which comprises half of the body, an accurate body composition analysis can be achieved.
It would be easy to consider the body composition as two segments: the upper and lower half, right and left half, or diagonal section of the body. However, this would be measuring impedance with the assumption that the metabolically stable limbs and metabolically active trunk share common characteristics, and thus cannot be completely accurate.
